Course Overview

The Yacht & Country Club is a private, member-owned club at 3883 SE Fairway East in Stuart. Established in 1969 near the Manatee Pocket, it was the first golf course community in Stuart. The club credits Charles P. Martyn with the original course, which was in play by 1971, when it hosted charity pro-ams featuring Jack Nicklaus, Perry Como and Sam Snead. TCPalm and GolfPass also credit Charles Ankrom with work on the original layout. In 2020 the club completed a roughly $3 million renovation by Tom Pearson, a longtime Nicklaus Design associate, who rebuilt drainage, added native areas, and created shots over water with bailout areas for higher handicaps while stretching the back tees more than 100 yards. The par 71 now plays from five sets of tees, from 4,440 to 6,574 yards, with a 72.3 rating and 127 slope from Tee #5. The Crooked Creek Canal runs through the course and gives the community deep-water access to the Manatee Pocket and the St. Lucie Inlet via Port Salerno, and the club notes that a steady breeze comes into play on almost every round.

Fairway Conditions

GolfPass lists Bermuda grass greens. TCPalm reported that the 2020 Pearson renovation went down to the bones of the course to fix overdue drainage and added native areas the course had never had, opening up the look off the tee while the subtlety of the greens remains. A Golf Digest panelist review (the listing still shows pre-renovation yardage) summed it up as "Old Florida course in great shape. Greens nearly perfect." Public review volume is thin, so contact the club for current agronomy and cart rules.

Alex's Take

From Alex Haigh

“The YCC of Stuart is one of those clubs that quietly delivers everything you'd want from a private club experience: warm, welcoming, and completely unpretentious. The course is enjoyable to play. It won't beat you up, but it'll keep you honest, and the yacht club and marina add a lifestyle dimension that most golf clubs simply don't have. I've had clients who toured the community for the golf and ended up falling in love with the marina. It's that kind of place.”
