Course Overview

Martin Downs Country Club is a public golf club at 3801 SW Greenwood Way in Palm City, close to I-95. Its 18-hole Osprey Creek course, formerly known as the Tower course, was designed by Treasure Coast architect Charles Ankrom; the club gives 1979 as its official opening, while some directories list 1981. Martin Downs once had a second course, Crane Creek, which closed in 2016 and is now the site of the private Banyan Creek Golf Club. The club bills itself as a former PGA Tour and U.S. Tour qualifying site, and the course plays through the Martin Downs neighborhoods with eight lakes, plenty of bunkers and some elevation change for Florida. Stanley Campbell bought the club at auction in April 2021, making Martin Downs one of the few Black-owned golf courses in Florida, and the clubhouse includes a spa, Chippers restaurant and event space. The par 72 plays 6,788 yards from the Gold tees (73.5 / 132) across five sets of tees, down to 4,380 yards from the Silver tees.

Fairway Conditions

Osprey Creek has Bermuda greens, and the club describes a traditional Florida layout of lakes, bunkers and hills. GolfPass reviewers rate the layout well (4.1 out of 5) but conditions lower (2.8), and bunkers, water hazards and undulating greens are the challenges they mention most. After buying the club in 2021, Stanley Campbell rehired a former greenskeeper and the superintendent put in a maintenance plan that doubled the course's water supply. Walking is not allowed because of the distance between holes, so cart fees are built into every round.

Seasonal: 75°F-91°F

Palm City has a humid subtropical climate with mild, drier winters and hot, humid summers, so golf is played year-round. Peak season from November through April brings comfortable mid-70s highs. Summers reach the upper 80s and low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through September. Martin Downs sits inland near I-95, away from the ocean breeze, so summer afternoons can feel hotter than on the barrier island courses.

Alex's Take

From Alex Haigh

“At Osprey Creek the routing feels natural, and Ankrom's shaping gives the fairways this rolling quality that you don't always get in Florida.”
